The Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) will host a six-nation tournament in Gaborone in July after plans for a four-team event collapsed.
"The union will be hosting a six-nation tournament from July 20 to 29 in Gaborone," BRU president Bob Lekan revealed. Lekan, who retained his position unopposed in BRU national executive elections, said Zambia, Mauritius, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Nigeria, have all confirmed their participation.
He disclosed that negotiations with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia for the four-team tournament did not yield fruit thanks to the challenges their respective rugby federations faced. Lekan announced that they still plan to construct a P16 million stadium. The stadium will house a practice field, a main field, stands and BRU offices. He however, pointed out that they are yet to secure a sponsor for the project.BRU struggled with sponsorships last year with Orange withdrawing its funding deal.
